Welcome to the APICS Canadian District Website

APICS The Association for Operations Management is the global leader and premier source of the body of knowledge in operations management, including production, inventory, supply chain, materials management, purchasing, and logistics. Since 1957, individuals and companies have relied on APICS for its superior training, internationally recognized certifications, comprehensive resources, and worldwide network of accomplished industry professionals.

The APICS chapters in Canada have been bringing professional development and networking opportunities to professionals since 1961, when APICS chartered the Hamilton Chapter, its first chapter outside the United States.  During its first year, chapters were formed in Toronto, the Grand Valley area, in Montreal, London, and the Niagara region.  Since then, we have grown to include 19 professional chapters, and 13 student chapters, providing services to members and the community from coast to coast.

2013 APICS Canadian District Student Case Competition

On the weekend of March 8 and 9, the Canadian District of APICS, the Association for Operations Management, hosted its second annual Canadian Student Case Competition in Burlington Ontario. Competing this year were eight teams, representing Algonquin College (Ottawa), Durham College (Oshawa), Seneca College (North York), Mohawk College (Hamilton) and Fanshawe College (London).

The weekend began on Friday evening with an excellent presentation by Keith Hoey, President of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, followed by an opportunity for students to do some networking, and then dinner. After dinner, it was time for the gloves to come off.

Students were provided with a copy of a case study from the Richard Ivey School of Business. Students were then responsible to analyse the case, to create a written set of findings and recommendations, and to prepare a 15 minute oral presentation.  All of this had to be completed by 9:30 AM the following morning.

A majority of the teams pulled “all-nighters”, and one team even reported sending their designated presenter to bed early while the rest of the team stayed up to analyze the case and fine tune their recommendations. By Saturday morning, every team was on time with well written submissions and completed presentations.  However, we cannot give the same great comments about their bed-head and red eyes from lack of sleep!

One group of judges reviewed and graded the written submissions, while another set of judges watched and scored the oral presentations.  All of the judges commented that they were very impressed with the quality of submissions and ability of the students.

In the end, it was a team from Seneca College that proved to have the highest overall score.  The winning team will now have the opportunity to represent the APICS Canadian District at the International Student Case Competition being held September 27 and 28 prior to the APICS International Conference and Exposition in Orlando.

A very big thank you goes out to Arcelormittal (Dofasco) in Hamilton for their generous financial donation. Funding for this event was a combination of Corporate Sponsorship, team entry fees, donations from APICS Canadian Chapters and, finally, from the APICS Canadian District

Your help and financial support is still needed to offset the costs associated with sending the team to represent the Canadian District at the APICS International Student Case Competition.  For more information about how you can contribute as an individual, chapter, or company, please contact either Humphrey Vernaus (Humphrey.Vernaus@StandardAero.com) or Lloyd Clive (lclive@flemingc.on.ca).

In conclusion, the 2013 event has generated great relationships between professionals, volunteers and College Students, and created interest in students to pursue careers in Supply Chain and Operations Management.  Additionally, several colleges in Canada are considering chartering new, or revitalizing existing, APICS Student Chapters.

Mark your calendars now! The 2014 competition will be held on January 24 to 25, 2014, at a location to be determined.  Any questions about the 2014 event should be directed to Lloyd Clive, District Academic Liaison, at: lclive@flemingc.on.ca

Representing the winning team (to be known as “Team Canada”) in no particular order is: Kateryna Marynych, Dante Carlos, Rubin Varghese, Qiongying Zhu, Muhammad Manji and the teams advisor Mary Drane from Seneca College.
